She is a Global Master Practitioner with EMCC, Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, and board director for EMCC UK. Most of what we ask of leaders and coaches today is built on an unspoken assumption: that the goal is ever-greater performance. Many of our systems are structured that way. It is no coincidence that we often look to elite sport for our leadership philosophies and indeed the field of executive coaching has its origins there.
There, however, teams and individuals spend the overwhelming majority of their time in training and preparation, with performance itself as the occasional, hard-won moment. Contrast that with the world of work, where we increasingly expect performance to be constant, and ask whether that expectation is sustainable, or even healthy.
This session invites a different question: what if the purpose of leadership and coaching isn't to extract higher performance, but to build healthier systems, ones full of support, innovation, care, adaptability and meaning? Not instead of performance, but as what performance actually depends on.
In a world being reshaped by technological, social, political and environmental change faster than most organisations can absorb, adaptability and health may matter more than raw output, and building systems capable of both may be the real work ahead for anyone leading or coaching within them.
